New Zealand

The New Zealand part of our 1987-1989 world tour.

When we arrived in New Zealand it felt almost like coming home: the weather was crispy, later even downright cold. We bought hats, shawls, gloves and an extra sleeping bag, but we still suffered badly from the -10°C nights at the base of Mt. Cook.

The culture is very British (those school uniforms!), but what a nature! Despite of the cold and the rain we enjoyed the extremely wet west coast of South Island with its glaciers, the cities of Christchurch and Queenstown and the beauty of Milford Sound. On North Island we were amazed by the volcanic activity around Rotorua (cycling on steaming hot ground) and dwarfed by the beautiful, centuries old giant kauri trees.
